R�sum� :	This report contributes in various ways to the debate on a sustainable cocoa economy. A sustainable cocoa economy is where each person investing time or money into the supply chain would be able to earn a decent income for themselves and their family, work in good conditions, and in a manner which did not harm the environment. It provides an overview of the various stakeholders in the cocoa and the wider chocolate supply chain. It identifies the concentration and purchasing power of companies as well as the trends in the supply chain. Finally, it makes a series of recommendations to the various stakeholders in the supply chain.

R�sum� :	Cooperative development in Africa can be said to have traversed two main eras: the era of state control and that of liberalization. The first era lasted up to the early 1990s and saw the origin and substantial growth of cooperatives on the continent. During that period, different models of cooperative development were introduced on the continent. We distinguish a unified cooperative model, a social economy model, a social movement model, a producers' model and an indigenous model. But in all cases, cooperatives were engulfed into state politics. However, little is known about the impact of liberalization measures on these models. Our research in 11 African countries reveals that cooperatives in Africa have survived the market forces and continued to grow in number and membership. We see a slow but sure erosion of the unified model and the adoption of a social economy model. Cooperatives in Africa are re-examining their organizational forms and diversifying their activities in response to members' interests and needs.

R�sum� :	WIDE sponsored a day-long economic literacy training on May 20, 2000 in Brussels, Belgium. The workshop was linked to a WIDE-sponsored consultation entitled "From Seattle to Beijing: How can women�s economic human rights be safeguarded in times of globalisation? The impact of macro-economy on women". Among the 30 participants were women from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Eastern, Central and Western Europe, both activists and academics. The group included women with considerable expertise in economic policy, and women just being introduced to macro-economic policy. As part of WIDE�s on-going economic literacy work, the overall objective was to empower women from the North, South and East to participate in international policy debate in order to promote women�s rights and gender equity.

R�sum� :	This manual presents the ValueLinks methodology � a compilation of action-oriented methods for promoting economic development with a value chain perspective. It can be used by development projects or by public agencies promoting specific agribusiness, handicraft or manufacturing sub-sectors of the economy. The ValueLinks manual structures the know-how of value chain promotion into 12 modules according to the project cycle. Each module covers the typical tasks that business organisations and facilitators of value chain promotion have to perform. Users can choose among a total of 37 tasks, e.g. � value chain mapping�, � agreeing on a vision� or � engaging private partners in development work�. Text boxes present tools and templates as well as concrete examples of value chain projects supported by GTZ around the world. The manual has no specific sectoral focus. The emphasis is on those product markets that offer better market access for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and farmers, and provide new job opportunities for the poor.

R�sum� :	This paper emphasizes the role of knowledge management and communication in value chains from the perspective of resource-poor producers in Latin America. Based on value chain literature, social network theories and concepts of knowledge management and communication, it develops some basic principles of a concept of knowledge management and communication in value chain. Then it presents three value chains (coffee, silk and jaggery) and their information and knowledge problems as barriers for sustaining market relations and/or improving competitiveness. Their effects are conflicting relationships between stakeholders of the value chain, low innovation rates and incompliance with contracts, which put the whole chain at risk. The use of media, including ICT-based media, and the strategy of network-building to increase social capital are presented and discussed as instruments to overcome these problems. While media, especially ICT-based media, can overcome information access problems for ICT literate stakeholders, strengthening horizontal ties is key in order to translate, diffuse and appropriate information and knowledge. Local leaders can act as bridges, linking consumers� demand and producers� supply, facilitating the development of co-innovations. Finally, acknowledging the human dimension of economic relationships means putting the person and their social relationships into the heart of research and development.
